Note Cards in Google Drive

People in class have been reporting that NoodleTools has been deleting some of their note cards in between work sessions.

Some people have decided that they would prefer to keep physical note cards on index cards. To manage their outline those who choose to do physical note cards can write out their outline or come up with an appropriately detailed codification system on the cards for identifying sources and sub-questions related to the note card. This is a great option. If you have chosen this path, just make sure you are careful not to lose your note cards. That would be sad and then you would have to re-do them.

For people who would like to still complete their note cards electronically, I would recommend using the spreadsheet in Google Drive to keep and organize note cards. For an instructional video on how to do this and how to organize note cards into an outline form, see the video below.

01.23 - End of Semester Presentations

At the beginning of class today, project teams had 15 minutes in which to practice and fine tune their presentations. Before this project team time, I reviewed the rubric for presentations (see below).

We then had all of the project teams present their end of semester presentations.

Following these presentations we took time to write thank you notes to the various people that helped the project teams with their projects throughout the semester.

Homework:

Continue working on your research project at home (finding resources, creating note cards, building your outline, and writing your paper). The rubric for the research paper is available here.

Research papers are due tomorrow.

01.22 - Presentation Preparation

In preparing this presentation, everyone had copies of the presentation outline document or access to them. I also provided project teams with the course aims for our class to help in the course evaluation portion of this presentation.

Everyone had the rest of the period to work. I was on hand to answer questions and rotated amidst groups checking in with different partners.

We will present these presentations tomorrow.

Homework

Continue working on your area of your project team's presentation evaluating successes and areas for change.
Continue working on your research project at home (finding resources, creating note cards, building your outline, and writing your paper). The rubric for the research paper is available here.

Complete work associated with your team's project as necessary.
Complete missing work and revise any assignment that scored below a 92.

Revised work should have been submitted by Tuesday, 1/21 in order to be included on the 2nd quarter grade report. Work submitted after this day, will still be graded and entered into the grade book, it just will not be in on time to appear on the printed grade report (it will appear on all subsequent grade reports). Everyone may continue to revise and submit work after the end of the semester.

01.15 - Civic Action Presentation

Today project teams met to address relevant business related to their projects and to work on their end of the semester project which will assess the strengths and areas of improvement related to their projects, research, and the course.

Everyone had the following slide to address and guide their work:

For the people on each project team conducting the course evaluation, I provided the stated course aims for our class to help them assess the ways in which the aims had been met and the ways in which the course could be improved. To clarify what these different aims attempt to describe, see the following annotations:

1.13 - Reciprocity Flags Revisited

Today in class, we revisited the reciprocity flag activity that we did at the beginning of the year.

At the beginning of class, we reviewed and evaluated the goals that everyone made for themselves at the beginning of the year. These observations were recorded in everyone's writing journals (see prompt below). Upon completing this writing, individuals then turned and shared what they wrote with a partner. When this was complete we came together as a class and one person from each project team shared out what they wrote and/or what they discussed with their conversation partner.

Next, everyone added a drawing to their reciprocity flag. The drawing was a badge for something they feel they have achieved so far this year (see prompt below). After everyone had a chance to complete this, we went around the room and each person briefly stated what their badge represented.

1.09 - Research Rubrics & Creating Outlines

At the beginning of class today, we reviewed the research rubric for the research paper as a means of getting a sense for how the paper will come together.

Next, I went over how to use NoodleTools to create an outline of the research papers. In reviewing this process, I also spoke about how to use the outline and note cards on NoodleTools as pieces to assess whether the paper is fully developed or requires more research in certain areas. This talk is available via screencast below.

I then had on hand copies of each project team's research questions. Everyone then spent the next 15-20 minutes creating general responses to the research questions as a means of establishing how well they were positioned to address that section of the paper and where they may want to go back and do more research.

In the remaining time in class, everyone was able to work on completing or revising assignments as necessary. I met individually with students to respond to questions, provide help with assignments, and check in on their progress with research.

Homework:

Continue research at home finding resources, adding to your bibliography, and creating note cards as necessary.

Complete work associated with your team's project as necessary.

1.08 - Project Team Meeting / Notecards

At the beginning of class today, project teams met and discussed recent activities. I gave project teams some agenda items (see below) and then teams discussed whatever other work was relevant to their projects. In this meeting, anyone who still needed to complete or revise meeting minutes took notes so that we could get those grades into the grade book in a timely manner.

Project Team Meeting Agenda Items:

After about 15 minutes, we adjourned the project team meetings and everyone headed down to the computer lab in the library to work on our research projects. The main focus of work today was in creating note cards. The final number of note cards everyone should have is 40.

Homework:

Continue research at home finding resources, adding to your bibliography, and creating note cards as necessary.

1.07 - Assignment Review and Revision

In class today we were taking a look at recent work to identify necessary revisions for completed work or which assignments people still need to submit. We were specifically focused on the following assignments:

In class I reviewed each assignment, let individuals know if they still owed the assignment, and was on hand to answer questions and meet with students. Extra copies of all assignments were available and everyone had the rest of the period to work on assignments as necessary.

At the end of the period, project teams got together to meet. We did not have enough time for a full meeting and so will resume meetings next class before going down to the library.

Homework:

Continue research at home finding resources, adding to your bibliography, and creating note cards as necessary.

Complete work associated with your team's project as necessary.

Complete missing work and revise any assignment that scored below a 92.

1.06 - Notecards

Today, we were using NoodleTools at the library to create note cards for our research project (see video below for step by step directions on how to do this).

At this point, everyone should have all seven sources for their paper and at least 10 note cards. The final number of note cards everyone should have is 40.

1.02 - Civic Action Reflection (substitute)

I was not in class today. I left the substitute with the following directions:

Have students respond to the Civic Action Reflection questions.
If they have extra time, they can work independently on other work.

Homework:

If you did not do so in class, finish responding to the Civic Action Reflection questions.

If you have not done so already, everyone should have their 7 sources (at least) and at least 10 notecards for their research project (see post on 12.06 and 12.19 for more information)

Complete missing work and revise any assignment that scored below a 92.
